A Royal Marine stationed in Afghanistan recently received a “Dear John” letter from his girlfriend back home. It read as follows:
Dear Martin,The Royal Marine, his feelings deeply hurt, asked his fellow Marines for any snapshots they could spare of their girlfriends, sisters, ex-girlfriends, aunts, cousins etc.. In addition to the picture of Helen, Martin included all the other pictures of the pretty girls he had collected from his friends.
There were 49 photos in that envelope…along with this note:
Dear Helen, I’m so sorry, but I can’t quite remember who you are. Please take your picture from the pile, and send the rest of them back to me. Look after yourself, Martin.Posted by Paul on 10 Nov 2008 | Tagged as: Rant
The idea of flying cars appears to have come back into fashion. Several car and aircraft manufacturers have been showing off prototypes and concepts (Terrafugia, Audi, Alfa Romeo, PAL-V etc.) Now obviously some of these are no more than technology projections, others are reality (or almost). I can see the appeal. Who hasn’t sat in a traffic jam wishing they could just hit a button on the dashboard and launch their car into the air and fly free of the jam?
As an idle daydream it seems ideal, but if you actually think it through then reality is somewhat less friendly. First of all if it flies you’re going to need a flying licence, that’s expensive and time consuming. Secondly you are really going to have to keep on top of maintenance and servicing. If you’re flying at 3000ft and that funny noise you’ve been wondering about leads to a sudden loss of power then phoning the RAC isn’t going to help much as you plummet to your death.
But let’s ignore the technical issues above, maybe automated pilot assistance systems and technology will get rid of those problems. There are many people out there who shouldn’t really be in control of a car. You meet them everyday, but would you want them flying small aircraft? Poor spatial awareness on the road is a bad thing, just imagine it in a three dimensional space!
Picture a scene where cars are cruising along the motorway, near the speed limit. Everything is flowing well until a car’s roofbox falls off, blocking one of the lanes and causing a hold up. The traffic slows down and queues form. Nearly half the cars in the rapidly forming queues can fly so they start unfurling rotors and wings and switching their vehicles into airborne mode. Who is going to make sure the many take-offs are organised and safe. With many “cars” flying into the air at different angles and at different speeds, some accelerating quickly others more sluggish surely the likelihood of airborne collisions is great?
I’m not even going to mention (ok so I am!) the problems with trees, overhead cables, poles and pylons. I can see the possibility of an airborne public transport service with flight capable emergency services vehicles, but will we see the day when everyday cars flying is the norm? I don’t think so.

Regular followers of my blog will be aware that I’m having difficulty keeping up daily updates. Life is somewhat busy at the moment and I rarely have as much time as I would like to work on this. Don’t worry, it will keep going and I aim to get back to daily updates as soon as possible.
Hopefully after Christmas things will quieten down a little and I’ll be able to put some serious extra time in. It’s been too long since I posted any proper articles here and I’m looking forward to writing some more material.
Thank you for visiting my blog, and thank you for taking the time to read this.

His neighbours used to feel sorry for Farmer Evans when he said he’d be ploughing his fields again this year with his old cow…Until they saw this photo!!
